The East-West Parliamentary Practice Project (EWPPP), headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan nongovernmental organization founded in 1990 as a joint initiative of the European Cultural Foundation (NL) and the Ford Foundation (US) with the aim of providing support for parliaments in the newly emerging democracies in Central/Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

The Western Balkans need a credible enlargement perspective as well as an enhanced EU engagement in the region.
We provide valuable expertise on the coordination and written communication with EU institutions during EU accession and integration processe. Previous enlargements have shown that together with the political and economic criteria, the Copenhagen criteria, it is the Madrid criterion, under which a new member must give a guarantee that it can implement and enforce the entire body of Community law in full, which is today posing a great challenge to candidate countries
Extensive and comprehensive knowledge on the performance and role of parliament in a functioning democracy is one our main training proficiencies. The most important and pivotal parliamentary procedures contain certain rules and regulations that ensure that democracy functions flawlessly and good governance takes place in a fair and transparent manner.
Citizen participation is a key component in policy decision-making. Poverty, lack of education and insufficient mechanisms to incorporate citizen participation pose big challenges in countries in transition. Transparency and accountability are not attainable unless citizens participate in the decision-making process.

Regional conferences include participation of all regional actors, MPs and civil society, on matters of mutual interest.
Specific trainings with the participation of EU experts and MPs in order to gain another practical perspective on the issues.
Exchange visits of non-partisan parliamentary delegation to a target country include meetings with representative of all branches of government, civil society actors as well as opinion-makers. Both informal and formal aspects of such visits are essential to its success.
